Short answer: The Pursuit of God can help Christians make decisions without demanding certainty by directing confidence toward God’s character rather than toward perfect information, private signs, or an anxiety-free feeling. Scripture calls believers to wisdom, prayer, counsel, obedience, and trust. It does not promise that every responsible decision will arrive with complete certainty.
The desire for certainty can become a demand for control
Many decisions matter deeply: marriage, employment, relocation, church membership, caregiving, retirement, education, ministry, finances, or medical options. It is reasonable to want clarity. The problem comes when we assume, “I cannot obey unless God removes every uncertainty.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 calls believers to trust the Lord rather than lean entirely on personal understanding. James 1:5 calls us to ask God for wisdom. Neither passage teaches that wisdom always comes as a supernatural feeling that eliminates ambiguity.
Tozer’s emphasis on God-centered faith can help because it shifts attention away from controlling the future. The Christian’s deepest security is not the ability to predict every consequence. It is belonging to God while making responsible, biblically faithful choices.
Start with what Scripture has already made clear
Before seeking special guidance, ask whether the Bible has already established a boundary.
- Is the action honest?
- Does it require sin?
- Does it violate a clear responsibility?
- Is it driven by greed, revenge, lust, pride, fear, or manipulation?
- Does it honor commitments already made?
- Can it be pursued with love of God and neighbor?
A decision inside biblical freedom is different from a decision Scripture already forbids.
Use wisdom instead of chasing signs
A responsible decision process can include:
Prayer
Ask for wisdom, pure motives, courage, and willingness to obey—not merely for the preferred outcome.
Scripture
Use Scripture to shape character and boundaries. Do not turn isolated verses into secret codes for unrelated decisions.
Facts
Gather relevant information. Faith is not strengthened by refusing to learn what can reasonably be known.
Counsel
Seek mature people who can challenge your assumptions, especially those who are not emotionally invested in your preferred choice.
Motive review
Ask what you are afraid to lose and what you most want to gain.
Responsible choice
When options are biblically permissible and enough wisdom has been gathered, a Christian may need to choose without total certainty.
Be careful with impressions
Tozer’s “speaking voice” language can be misunderstood if separated from Scripture. Christians differ in how they understand impressions, providential circumstances, and subjective guidance. Whatever one’s view, private impressions should not outrank Scripture, bypass wisdom, or be used to pressure other people with “God told me.”
When an impression is involved, test it. Ask whether it agrees with Scripture, produces humble obedience, survives wise counsel, and avoids manipulation.
What if you make the wrong choice?
Not every disappointing result proves a sinful decision. Wise decisions can lead through difficulty. Likewise, a successful outcome does not automatically validate poor motives.
If you discover genuine sin, repent and correct what can be corrected. If you made the best responsible decision available and circumstances later changed, learn rather than live under false condemnation.

Put it into practice
For one unresolved decision, stop asking first, “How can I become completely certain?” Ask instead, “What would wise, truthful, Scripture-shaped faithfulness look like with the information God has given me?”
