How Do I Start Making My First Disciple?

You can begin making your first disciple by praying for one person, inviting that person into a clear relational commitment, opening Scripture together, practicing obedience, praying honestly, and helping them eventually do the same with someone else. Disciple-making does not require a large program or formal title.

Pray for One Person

Ask God to show you someone who is spiritually hungry, teachable, or in need of encouragement.

Begin With a Clear Invitation

Say something simple: “Would you like to meet regularly to read Scripture, pray, and help each other follow Jesus?”

Choose a Simple Rhythm

Weekly or every other week can work if the commitment is consistent.

Open Scripture Every Time

Let God’s Word provide the foundation rather than building the relationship around opinions.

Ask Obedience Questions

“What is God showing us?” and “What will we do because of it?” keep the relationship practical.

Article 020: Pray Together

Do not only talk about prayer. Practice it.

Share Your Real Life

Appropriate honesty about your own struggles, repentance, and growth makes discipleship more credible.

Add Accountability Gently

Revisit commitments without becoming controlling or shame-driven.

Keep the Local Church Connected

Encourage worship, membership, baptism, service, and relationships with other mature believers.

Plan for Reproduction From the Beginning

Tell the person that the goal is not permanent dependence on you. The hope is that both of you continue following Jesus and eventually help others do the same.
