The Pursuit of God vs. The Knowledge of the Holy: Which Should You Read First?

Short answer: If you are new to A. W. Tozer and want to begin with spiritual hunger, surrender, and personally seeking God, read The Pursuit of God first. If your immediate need is to think more deeply about who God is and His attributes, begin with The Knowledge of the Holy. Many readers will benefit from reading The Pursuit of God first and then The Knowledge of the Holy.

The two books ask different primary questions

Both books are among Tozer’s best-known works, and Moody Publishers currently groups The Knowledge of the Holy, The Pursuit of God, and God’s Pursuit of Man as three major spiritual classics. Yet the books are not interchangeable.

The Pursuit of God is driven by a relational and devotional question: How can a believer move beyond merely knowing truths about God into a life of actively knowing and seeking Him? Its ten chapters move through spiritual hunger, surrender, removal of inner barriers, faith, God’s presence, listening, the gaze of the soul, proper Creator-creature order, meekness, and the sanctifying of ordinary life.

The Knowledge of the Holy is organized around the doctrine and attributes of God. Its central concern is that what a person thinks about God profoundly shapes worship and life. It explores themes such as God’s self-existence, eternity, immutability, omniscience, wisdom, holiness, justice, mercy, grace, love, and sovereignty.

Read The Pursuit of God first if…

Choose The Pursuit of God first when your primary questions sound like these:

Why do I feel spiritually dry even though I know Christian truth?
How can I seek God more deeply?
What does surrender look like?
How can ordinary life become worship?
How do I move from religious activity toward genuine communion with God?

The book is relatively short, intensely devotional, and built around spiritual response. Readers who are spiritually hungry but not looking for a systematic study of divine attributes often find it the easier doorway into Tozer.

Read The Knowledge of the Holy first if…

Choose The Knowledge of the Holy first when your questions are more theological:

What is God like?
Why does God’s holiness matter?
What do Christians mean by God’s eternity or immutability?
How should God’s sovereignty and love shape worship?
Are my thoughts about God too small?

It is still devotional, but its structure is doctrinal. The reader is repeatedly asked to contemplate God’s character and then respond in worship.

Why the books work well together

The two books correct opposite weaknesses.

A person can pursue “spiritual experience” without thinking carefully about the God being pursued. The Knowledge of the Holy helps guard against that by elevating biblical thought about God’s character.

A person can also study God’s attributes while remaining personally cold, distracted, or self-sufficient. The Pursuit of God presses doctrine toward desire, surrender, obedience, and communion.

In that sense the books can be read as complementary: know who God is, and seek Him as He truly is.

A practical reading order

For many readers, this sequence works well:

Read The Pursuit of God slowly, one chapter at a time.
Record one major truth and one practical response from each chapter.
Read The Knowledge of the Holy next, perhaps one attribute at a time.
Ask how each attribute corrects or deepens the way you pursue God.
Return to selected chapters of The Pursuit of God with a richer theological framework.

If you are already in a theology-heavy season, reverse the order.

Which is easier for a small group?

A group focused on spiritual formation and application may find The Pursuit of God easier to organize around discussion and obedience. A group prepared for more doctrinal reflection may prefer The Knowledge of the Holy.

The best choice depends less on which book is “better” and more on the question your group is actually trying to answer.
