How Do You Disciple Someone Who Has Serious Doubts About Christianity?

Discipling someone with serious doubts requires patience, honest investigation, biblical grounding, and freedom to ask difficult questions without being treated automatically as rebellious. Doubt can become a place where faith is clarified when truth is pursued carefully.

Ask What Kind of Doubt They Have

Intellectual questions, disappointment with God, church hurt, moral conflict, and personal suffering require different responses.

Do Not Panic

A difficult question does not mean the person is about to abandon Christ.

Separate Questions From Excuses

Some doubts need thoughtful answers; others may conceal resistance to obedience.

Study Together

Use Scripture, trustworthy books, qualified teachers, and historical resources.

Admit What You Do Not Know

False certainty can damage credibility.

Keep the Gospel Central

Do not let secondary questions obscure who Jesus is and what He accomplished.

Pray for Understanding

Faith is not produced by argument alone.

Stay Relationally Present

The person may need time to work through questions.

Write the Doubt as a Specific Question

Instead of treating “I have doubts” as one large problem, help the person state the concern precisely. A question such as “Why would a good God allow this suffering?” can be studied more carefully than a vague sense that Christianity no longer makes sense.

Honest Doubt Can Lead to Stronger Conviction

Disciple-making should create room where questions are tested by truth rather than silenced by fear.
