How Do You Disciple a New Christian?

A new Christian needs a simple foundation in the gospel, Scripture, prayer, obedience, church life, and basic Christian identity. Early discipleship should not overwhelm the person with too much information. It should help the new believer learn how to follow Jesus in ordinary life.

Revisit the Gospel Often

Make sure the believer understands salvation by grace through faith and does not quietly replace the gospel with performance.

Teach How to Read the Bible

Begin with manageable passages and show how to observe, understand, and apply Scripture.

Teach Prayer by Practicing It

Pray together rather than only assigning prayer as homework.

Connect the Person to a Local Church

New believers need preaching, baptism, fellowship, accountability, communion, and relationships with other Christians.

Address Immediate Areas of Obedience

Relationships, habits, sexuality, money, forgiveness, and honesty may require early attention.

Expect Questions

New Christians may need explanations of terms and practices that longtime believers take for granted.

Avoid Information Overload

A few deeply understood truths are more helpful than rushing through dozens of doctrines.

Celebrate Growth

Notice first steps of obedience, courage, worship, and repentance.

Build a First-Month Foundation

For the first four weeks, keep the focus simple: gospel clarity, how to read Scripture, how to pray, and how to participate in the local church. A new believer does not need to master everything quickly; a strong foundation makes later growth more stable.

Build Toward Reproduction

Even a new believer can begin praying for friends, sharing a testimony, and eventually helping another person take steps toward Christ.
