Teaching disciples to obey Jesus means helping people understand His truth, identify what faithful response requires, practice that response in real life, and return honestly to evaluate whether they obeyed. Jesus did not command His followers merely to teach information. He said to teach disciples to observe everything He commanded.
Biblical teaching therefore aims at transformed living.
Start With What Jesus Actually Says
Obedience cannot be separated from Scripture. Disciple-making should regularly bring people into the words, commands, example, death, resurrection, and lordship of Jesus.
The teacher’s opinions must remain secondary.
A useful question after reading a passage is, “What does this reveal about Jesus, and what response does He require from us?”
Move From General Truth to Specific Action
People often agree with biblical principles while avoiding concrete obedience.
“Love your enemies” remains abstract until someone names a difficult relationship. “Forgive” becomes practical when a real offense is discussed. “Pray” becomes obedience when a time and place are chosen. “Make disciples” becomes specific when a person is identified and contacted.
Specificity turns agreement into a testable next step.
Ask About Obedience at the Next Meeting
If a disciple identifies an action but no one ever asks about it again, the relationship can drift back toward information transfer.
A simple follow-up question is powerful: “Last time you said you believed Jesus was asking you to do this. What happened?”
That question is not meant to shame. It communicates that obedience matters enough to revisit.
Teach Grace Alongside Obedience
Obedience is not a way to earn God’s acceptance. Christians obey because they belong to Christ and have received grace.
When a disciple fails, the response should include confession, forgiveness, learning, and a renewed step of obedience. Failure should not be ignored, but neither should it become the basis for condemnation.
Grace trains believers to return to Jesus and keep following.
Model Obedience Openly
A disciple-maker should also be able to say, “Here is what I am learning to obey.”
That keeps the relationship from becoming one-directional. The leader remains a disciple too.
Sharing appropriate examples of struggle, repentance, and obedience helps the learner see that following Jesus is a practiced life rather than a performance of spiritual certainty.
Teach the Whole Life, Not Isolated Religious Behaviors
Jesus’ commands reach money, relationships, sexuality, truthfulness, forgiveness, prayer, generosity, justice, witness, humility, service, and love.
Disciple-making should therefore connect Scripture with the real decisions a person faces.
The aim is not to create someone who behaves spiritually during meetings while remaining unchanged elsewhere.
End With a Clear Obedience Question
A strong discipleship conversation can end with: “Because of what we saw in Scripture today, what will you do before we meet again?”
Then pray specifically for that action.
Teaching disciples to obey Jesus looks like moving repeatedly from Scripture to response, from response to practice, and from practice back to honest reflection under grace.
Use an Obedience Loop Instead of a Lesson Finish Line
A practical rhythm is: read the text, understand the truth, name a response, practice it, and report back. The next meeting begins by reviewing the previous response before adding new material. This ‘obedience loop’ keeps discipleship from rewarding mere completion. It also gives the disciple-maker useful information about where fear, confusion, or resistance is appearing. Over time, the learner begins to expect that Scripture will lead somewhere—not toward earning God’s favor, but toward trusting and following the Lord who has spoken.
